VLC Player AV1 Codec Issues

Post by Administrator » Thu Jul 04, 2019 10:16 pm

This is how to fix the codec issues for AV1 Video

Code: Select all

Codec not supported:
VLC could not decode the format "av01" (AOMedia's AV1 Video)
or something like this in the terminal

Code: Select all

mp4 stream warning: unknown box type av1C (incompletely loaded)
mp4 demux warning: STTS table of 1 entries
main decoder error: Codec `av01' (AOMedia's AV1 Video) is not supported.

Make sure you have the latest stable version of VLC Player, as this is a format only added within version 3.0.x

Ubuntu

Code: Select all

sudo snap install vlc
then to run type to open the player

Code: Select all

snap run vlc
or you could download from this page, https://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-ubuntu.html

For anyone who is interested in this format, there is also an image format encoded in av1 called avif. it's quite cpu intensive but seems to be the best compression rates to date. It's not currently natively supported in the browser, but will be in the future.
